Pack up a picnic and head to the Santa Ynez River, where a sand/pebble beach makes a great launchpad for swimming. Hiking and fishing are also on tap. The Live Oak Day Use Area, part of the Santa Ynez Recreation Area, offers riverside picnic tables beneath mighty oak trees. Grills are available for barbecues and burgers. If you forget anything, you can make it to Santa Barbara in 31 miles.
